10 tips – How to choose the best smart LED TV in India

Are you looking forward to buy or researching for an excellent smart LED TV?

There are more than hundred smart TVs available in India that claim to offer you the best in terms of features and functionality and at times price too.

But then the problem is how to find out the one, that fits all the standard criteria for smartness, possesses the mostly desired smart functionalities and then, importantly, falls in your budget.

It is easier, if you know on what all counts you should focus your search on. Grasp the important points one by one and find your best TV.

smart LED TV

In this review, I am going to tell you how to find the best smart LED TV according to your requirements and constraints (if any).

Here are the Tips for choosing the best smart TV for yourself that will serve as a guide:

Tip 1: Screen Size: Typically, this is the biggest factor in the buying decision. Usually, the bigger the screen the better the overall viewing experience, but take your room size and budget constraint. There are various screen sizes available from 20 inch (50cm) to 110(280cm) inch. The most popular among them are the middle sizes 32 inch (81cm), 40 inch (102 cm), 43 inch (108 cm) and 49 inch (123 cm).

Determine the distance from which you will usually watch your TV. As a thumb rule, you can calculate the best size, by dividing your ‘viewing distance from the screen’ by ‘1.60’ and ‘1.15’ for Full HD and Ultra HD resolution respectively. This would be the ideal size though you may need to adjust it either according to your room size or budget. For you to best appreciate the viewing experience, optimal screen size plays an important part. It also has close connection with the input signals and the resolution of your smart TV.

If your input signal is full HD (1080P) or 4K category (DTH signal in HD/ blu-ray disk), watching this on 720p would be an injustice, as you will not be able to appreciate the detailing. While DTH or cable viewers with standard definition broadcast, may have a good experience even on 720p screen. You may degrade or upgrade depending on the weight in your pocket.

Ultra HD (4K) is better if you can buy larger screens and sit closer in order to really appreciate the clarity. 720p is fading away into extinction gradually. I suggest Full HD (1080p) is the best bet for a couple of years from now.

Tip 2: Resolution (720p/1080p/4K): At present a full HD (ie High Definition or 1080p) is the best and median choice and, looking at the rate of TV technology enhancement, perhaps will remain so for about a couple of years from now. 720p is a tad bit lower resolution (and fading away) and 4K Ultra HD(the probable future) is higher. And, it’s likely that you would practically find no difference between the three unless your screen is very large (upwards of 70 inches) and you sit at distance of 5.5 ft (or lesser) from the screen. As the viewing distance increases, the difference between the three types diminishes quickly, and all three types of TV screens would appear nearly the same.

Tip 3: Cost: If quality is not the first priority then price is fine to be discussed the third! It assumes extreme importance sometimes. Usually, the larger the screen size and richer the features become the higher the price tag. Cheap TV sets are available but they have capability or performance shortcoming. And if that is the case, you should try avoiding those options. Make efforts to find the best of size and features at the most competitive cost.

Tip 4: Brand: Simple. If budget is not a major issue, go for major established and top brands like Sony, Panasonic, LG, Samsung, Vu, Micromax, Llyod and a few more. This ensures better product and a comparatively good after-sales service – even if you choose to overlook other tips below. However, I would insist you glance through all of them, as there are some black sheeps among good a normally fine lineage.

Tip 5: Refresh rate (60/120/240 Hz): Higher the better. Refresh rate is how frequently images (or frame) changes on screen. Fast changing scenes (ie images at basic level) require your TV to change (or refresh) the pixels displayed on the screen extremely quickly, for example in case of sporting events, action movies etc. Standard refresh rate (60 Hz or 60 times/frames per second) does not affect viewing of gradually changing or still images. But, fast moving images, scenes tend to blur and so demand quicker display refresh (120 Hz, 240Hz etc). But it’s noteworthy that most of the brands advertise their own fancy names for refresh rates(invariably, with the word ‘Motion’). But these do not actually quote the exact refresh rate. In such cases, divide the figure in the advertised fancy name by 2 to approximate the actual refresh rate.

Tip 6: Sound: Look out for at least 10W + 10W speakers for better sound experience. Lower than that would be an injustice to your audio experience. Already the flat panels have hardly any space left to include quality speakers. You may later enhance the listening experience using a home theatre system or sound bars, or better quality external speakers.

Tip 7: IPS display: Look out for options that offer IPS or In-Plane Switching displays. The main advantage of IPS screen technology is that it offers you wide viewing angle. The benefit is that you can witness good visual experience sitting in any corner of the room. The small disadvantage is that IPS screens consume approximately 10-15% more power than other screen technologies.

Tip 8: Warranty: Your Smart TV is a costly proposition compared to other consumer electronic items in your home, so warranty is an essential cover. Mostly TV manufacturers offer 1 year and sometime 2 years standard warranties on sale. However, to financially protect your TV against breakage, malfunction or costly repairs after the initial coverage period, I recommend purchase of additional or extended warranties. These are optional, offered by both the manufacturer and third party providers and commence immediately after the lapse of your standard warranty period. But, a word of caution – carefully go through the extended warranty terms especially what and what not it covers, else your warranty provider (just as in case of insurance companies) may deny the benefits for one reason or the other.

Tip 9: Installation & Wall-mount: Normally, all companies provide a set of TV stand and wall-mount brackets. And mostly, folks prefer having the TV up on the wall. But unlike TV stands you may find it difficult to tilt the f screen for convenience if the mounts do not allow it. Therefore, instead of same position holding wall mounts ask or buy the ones that allow movement either 4-way (right-left; forward-backward) or 6-way (right-left; forward-backward, upward –downwards). The latter is available only in larger screens only.

Further, see that the center of the screen is at your eye level – that’s the best position unless you have some other personal preference – or it may pain your neck.

Tip 9: Other factors: There are some other features that you may wish to have in your smart TV, but consider them only after the above Tips or when, for some reason, you need them the most.

Some useful features:

  • Screen Mirroring: Sharing your smartphone, laptop or tablet screen with your TV. It employs MiraCast wireless technology to mirror the display. Watching videos content of your smartphone on TV is a pleasing experience.
  • WebOS: You may also wish to look out for WebOS multitasking operating system in your TV that makes it easier to navigate on the web. Plus, it helps you switch through multiple services like YouTube, NetFlix, Amazon Videos etc. Its surfing the Net on your smart TV.
  • USB: Atleast two.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi: The TV has a built-in wireless adapter for easy internet connectivity and without using external. Else, you need to depend one ethernet or coaxial cables and the wires become messy at times.

Tip 10: Offers & Freebies: These appear mainly during festive season, or as part of promotional campaigns where companies offer various freebies. These could be in the form of items like speakers, gift coupons, discounts on extended warranty, 0% EMI, cashbacks etc.

So, in total we covered all the necessary things like screen size, resolution, price, brand, refresh rate etc. Now, you have got a pretty good idea about the factors that should ideally affect your buying decision for the best and smartest TV for your entertainment. Now, we also have a casual equation: larger screen = more features = higher price. The best TV and your top choice therefore should be the one that has most of the priority features as listed above at a not-so-pinching price tag.

You may have certain other things in mind such as certain queries related to the post, need for additional information or clarity on stated matter, in order to choose the best smart TV for your home or office. Please feel free to post your comments or queries, I’d be happy to respond to them.

Do remember, you smart TV will remain a part of your life for a few years, so it would be worthwhile to spend a little time to go into the nitty-gritty and select the best of the lot. Happy buying!
